We have had another very busy week. Our new story ' The three little pigs' broke into our classroom and we all had to be story detectives to find out who broke into our class. As a class we decided that the wolf was the villain of our story and we made wanted posters describing the big bad wolf. In cookery this week we made Piggy pizza buns and they were delicious. Our sound and letter of the is P and our number of the week is 3. We have had lots of funs doing activities linked to P and number 3. We enjoyed going to Llandarcy sports academy taking part in lots of sport activities. This week in geography we discussed why it is important to keep our environment tidy. we are very excited to today our garden ready for next term. In PSE this week we discussed the importance of washing our hands.
This week is welsh week. We have done lots of fun activities to learn the welsh culture and where we live. In Literacy this week read the story of Blodeuwedd and used flowers to make our own character from the story. We made welsh dragons out crepe paper for our display. We made pancakes and learnt about how shrove Tuesday is celebrated. We went to a gymnastics competition, we had lots of fun doing the routines we have been practising in school. We enjoyed cheering for everyone who had medals. We followed instruction to make our own welsh flag. In cookery this week we listened to the story of Gellert and made welsh cakes. In P.S.E this week we talked about what makes a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others. We have been practising our class song for the eisteddfod.
In Literacy this week we wrote our own instructions on how to grow a beanstalk. This week is keeping safe week. We have been to lots of workshops to learn how to keep safe. We had a visit from Sharon the firefighter who taught us how to keep safe if there was a fire. We learnt all about first aid and how to give CPR. We practiced how to cross the road safely. We learnt to say how we feel in welsh and had lots of fun playing bingo. In cookery we read the story of Little Red Riding hood and made jam tarts. We had a good bye party for Miss Hull. We enjoyed dancing in the valentines disco.
In Literacy this week we talked about what plants need to grow. We followed instructions to plant our own beans and will be looking after them over the next few weeks. We worked together to tidy our class garden. As a class we have lots of great ideas for our garden. In art this week we collected natural materials and made a collage of Jack and the beanstalk. We practiced saying how we feel in welsh and played fun games to help us remember. In music this week we chose instruments and took turns to play to the music. In maths this week we have worked together to sort objects. In science this week we talked about gravity and made a parachute to help carry our eggs to the ground. In cookery we read the story of Goldilocks and the three bears and made porridge.

In cookery we read the story of the Rapunzel and made a plait using puff pastry, they looked delicious.

In history we learnt all about Florence Nightingale. In welsh this week we practiced our numbers to 10 and played lots of fun games to help us remember. We enjoyed using our senses in senseology. We worked hard during swimming this week. In cookery we read the story of Cinderella and made magic wands out of fruit.
This week we have started a new topic - Traditional Tales! In our class we will start this new topic by doing lots of work around our story 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. On Tuesday a story had broken into our classroom! We had to find clues and investigate what story it was. We found a harp, golden eggs, beans and an axe. We read the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and then completed an activity about who we thought was the hero and the villain. In ICT we used paint on our Hwb accounts online to create a digital picture of Jack climbing the beanstalk. In numeracy we did lots of activities based around our number of the week - the number 9.
We are very proud of all the pupils in year 7! They have had a brilliant first term at Pen-Y-Bryn. Everyone has settled in well, made lots of new friends and worked really hard. This week we have done lots of lovely Christmas activities. On Monday we went to Seion Newydd to perform or watch the nativity story which was amazing, well done to the choir and the actors! We also had not one but two visits from Santa, we were very lucky! We had a visit from a local choir who sang us some excellent Christmas songs which we all enjoyed. In class we made Christmas tree ornaments and built shape snowmen Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone!
We have done lots of Christmas activities this week! In art we created our own Christmas tree collages. We painted our hands to print a Christmas tree and then when it had dried we added other craft materials as decorations. They look lovely hung around our classroom. In geography this week we travelled to our last country of the term. We sailed on our pirate ship all the way to France and tasted croissants and brie. We have also been busy practising for our Christmas concert rehearsal and we can't wait for you to see us next week. In cookery we made mince pies!
In numeracy our number of the week was 8. We used our bodies and various musical instruments to play the number 8 and then other numbers for the group to guess. We also practised writing and counting 8. This week we have been very busy practising for our Christmas concert performance. We have been learning the words and signs to our song and getting our costumes ready. Everyone had a brilliant time on our Christmas trip! We went on a tractor ride, fed the reindeer, went to visit Santa, listened to a story from Mrs Claus and hunted for chocolates in the Christmas trees. Then we went for a McDonalds lunch.
In PE this week we practised walking on our toes ready for the balance beam. We also continued to practice the different moves for the gymnastics competition. In numeracy our number of the week was the number five. We watched the Numberblocks five episode and did lots of number five activities. We also went on an outdoor number hunt and then put ourselves into the correct order. Back in the classroom we hung our numbers on the washing line in the correct order and then matched them to Numicon. In geography this week we sailed on our pirate ship to India. We listened to traditional Indian music, coloured in the flag and tasted different Indian food. All the pupils have also been working really hard on their individual targets this week.
I can't believe that the first half term is already over! All the pupils have settled in to Pen-y-Bryn really well. They have made new friends and worked really hard!!! This week we have been doing lots of Halloween activities. In maths this week we had a very special job to do. Scotland yard made us temporary top secret agents and we had to solve a terrible crime. Frankenstein had been poisoned and we had to examine and decode the evidence to find the culprit! We went on a trip to the pumpkin farm and picked our own pumpkins. This was lots of fun and we learnt about where pumpkins come from. In cooking this week we made scary Halloween jelly and Halloween biscuits. In RE this week we learnt about the Christian story of creation. We made a craft plate for each day and then presented our work to the rest of the class and told the story.
In literacy this week we have been doing lots of work on our phonics. We fed Stanley the snake, completed our sound workbook, played sound bingo and read a sound book. In numeracy we have been practising our counting skills and finding the missing numbers. We also enjoyed watching the 6th form fashion show, the pupils looked great! In RE this week we learnt about Christian symbols and made our own stained glass cross using card and crepe paper. They look lovely on our windows. Everyone enjoyed our trip to the woods, we were very lucky to miss the rain! In history we learnt about Halloween and why we celebrate it today. We did some Halloween activities which were lots of fun.
This week we have been doing lots of Harvest activities. We learnt about the Christian Harvest Festival and why it is celebrated. We then generated ideas using what we had learnt to design our harvest box. We decided to make a tractor pulling a trailer full of foods from the Harvest. It looked amazing! We have also been doing Autumn science experiments this week. We went on an Autumn walk around the school grounds collecting different natural materials that we found along the way. Back in class we tested the items that we had found to see if they floated or sank. We also tested apples to see what happened to them when they were covered in different liquids. We then drew the reaction after 4 hours and then again the next day. The last experiment we conducted was pumpkin volcanoes. We tested what happened when you mixed water, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Its been a very busy and exciting week! Have a lovely weekend.
In Art this week we made lovely underwater scenes. First we used a wash technique to paint a sea background which we left to dry. We then drew around a fish stencil onto bubblewrap and cut it out. Then we painted multicolours onto the bubble wrap and printed onto our sea backgrounds. Lastly we added sand and other details. In science this week we tested different materials to see if they float or sink. We then used our results to help us to build a boat that could carry gold across the ocean for pirate Pete. We enjoyed preparing for our pirate party it was lovely for everyone to come in and see the wonderful work the pupils have been doing this term.
In PE this week we started to practice gymnastics shapes for a competition at the end of term. The pupils did really well! In literacy this week we worked on a new sound of the week 'a'. We sorted pictures into their beginning sounds. We also learnt about myths and legends and read a legend from our topic country Zambia. In IT we learnt how to give each other instructions to practice for when we use the Bee Bots. We learnt forwards, backwards, left and right. We talked about how important it is to give accurate instructions. In maths this week we worked on our new number of the week '3'. We also practised our counting skills and learnt how to represent numbers in different ways. In team games we used our bodies to make music.
In geography this week we used our passports to board our pirate ship and sail the seven seas to Zambia! Once we arrived we explored the country. We tasted different foods and learnt the colours of the Zambian flag. In literacy we continued to work on our sound of the week 'm'. We spotted the initial 'm' words, completed a worksheet and then played 'm' bingo. Next week we will move on to a new sound. In maths we worked on a new number of the week and practised counting objects and pictures in different ways. We have also been doing baseline assessments this week to make sure that we are in the correct groups. All the pupils have worked really hard and had a fantastic week! Have a lovely weekend.
On Monday we had our first PE session with Mr James our PE teacher. We did lots of different exercises and worked really hard. In literacy this week we worked on the sound 'm'. We identified 'm' initial sound picture cards, sorted items into hoops, ones that initial sound was 'm' and ones that weren't, and lastly circled items on a worksheet. In geography this week we learnt about the UK. We tasted different foods and decided if we liked them, and we also learnt the colours of the British flag. We also went to our first Enterprise session this week with Mr Williams. We will be working on a special project with him this term. In numeracy this week we explored a new number of the week '1'. We have had a wonderful first week in Pen-Y-Bryn! All the pupils have been fantastic and already settled in really well. In maths this week we have been doing lots of activities based around our number of the week. In literacy we have been developing our fine motor skills and our comprehension skills. In art we created self portraits using half a photograph of our face and filling in the blanks. They were lovely and will go on our class display in the hall. We have also practised our deep breathing and imagination skills in our well-being session. In geography we made our own passports ready to start travelling around the world in our pirate ship! Everyone enjoyed making pizzas in cookery and choosing their own toppings. Have a lovely weekend everyone!
We have been very busy this week! On Tuesday we went on our Christmas trip and it was fantastic! We fed the reindeer, went on a tractor ride, walked through the grotto, saw Santa and listened to a story from Mrs Claus. After that we went to McDonalds for lunch which was delicious. Lastly, we went to the woods to hide the Christmas pebbles that we had painted in art the day before. Fingers crossed that someone will find them and put them on the schools Facebook page. We have also been busy practising for our Christmas concert. Its going really well, we hope you enjoy it! We also went swimming on Thursday, all the pupils are working really hard to improve their swimming skills. I hope that everyone has a great weekend. Only 2 weeks left of this term, where has the time gone?!?!
Merry Christmas everyone! We are well under way with our Christmas activities this week. We have been very busy with our concert performances, all the pupils have been fantastic and really enjoyed being on stage! In cookery this week we made gingerbread men and then decorated them using icing pens. In craft we used Christmas kits to make our own tree decorations. In enterprise we draw pictures of the character Bane from Batman and then made 3D models of a Bat Mobile. Have a great weekend everyone!
We have had a wonderful first week back in school! We started our new topic of 'People Who Help Us'. In literacy, we learn about lots of different jobs that people do to help us in our community. The pupils read different scenarios and matched them to the person who could help them. In Geography, we looked at a map of the UK and labelled the different countries. We also looked at famous london landmarks and matched them to our class model of London. In numeracy this week we have been sorting items in different ways and practising counting forwards and backwards. We have also been practising our money skills. We have been buying items from our role play shop 'Pudding Lane Bakery'. In ICT this week we started to learn about directional language so that we will be able to give Bee Bots instructions. This week we have been working really hard on our phonics. We have learnt a new sound and completed lots of different activities to practice. In geography we looked at different London landmarks again and then chose our favourite to draw and label. In ICT we explored the BeeBots. We made them move in different directions and for different lengths of time. This week we also did some outdoor learning. We went on a walk around the woods and talked about the different animals that might live there. We also collected leaves from our playground and made leaf rubbings. In numeracy this week we learnt how to record data using a tally. Have a nice weekend!
This week in Science we planted peppers and kiwis in our garden. In art we made a collage of the Great Fire of London. We used orange, yellow and red crepe paper to create the fire background and then cut out silhouettes of buildings from black card. They look great! We were very lucky this week to have a session with a music therapist. The pupils enjoyed singing along and playing the different instruments. In literacy we have been working in our groups on our phonics. We have been practising our new sound. In numeracy we have been practising recording a tally. We have also been playing number games to transfer these skills into different areas. Everyone enjoyed our trip to Morriston park on Wednesday. We went for a walk, played in the park and looked at the ducks.
This week in literacy we have been working on our comprehension skills. We have been looking at pictures and answering questions about them, and reading stories and checking our understanding. In ICT we have been learning how to code. We have been programming Bee Bots and creating algorithms to get to different spaces on a grid. As part of the Creative Schools Project we were lucky enough to have a Beat Boxer come in and work with the pupils. They absolutely loved it and some had a go at rapping! We also had a workshop with the Air Ambulance Service. We dressed up in their uniform and learnt about what they do and what to do in an emergency. We have also been doing lots of work on our targets this week, all the pupils are doing really well.
In literacy this week we have been finding out about lots of different jobs and matching the jobs to their equipment. We have also been thinking about what job we might like to do when we leave school. We have also been reading, practising our spellings and developing our fine motor skills. In numeracy this week we have been using our tally charts from last week to create pictograms of our results. We then used our pictograms to answer questions about the data we collected. We have also been practicing our money skills in a real life environment. We walked to the local shop and everyone had their own money to choose an item and pay for it themselves. We had a special artist come into school to do workshops will the pupils. They collaborated on a group piece of art and they all really enjoyed getting messy! In art this week we made lovely fireman pictures which are on display in our classroom.
We have been doing lots of work for our Heritage project this week. We wrote acrostic poems about HEROES in our community. We decorated our poems and entered them into a competition. We also made Welsh cakes in cookery which were delicious! This week we also started practising for our Eisteddfod performance. We wrote a poem about what we love about Wales which we are going to perform. We also decorated Welsh flags for our background. On Thursday we learnt about how Valentines Day started and why we send cards to people we love. We made our own cards and thought about the different things that we love.
This week we have been finishing our Eisteddfod competition entries! We have been working really hard to create a fire engine out of junk modelling as a class. We looked at photographs of fire engines and then decided what we wanted to include. We also practiced performing our poem which is lovely. In numeracy we have been learning the words for numbers by listening to a number rap, playing online games and matching the words to the numbers. We have also been using five frames to paint numbers. In history we have been looking at old pictures from the Great Fire of London and new pictures and deciding how we can tell which ones are now and which ones are then? We discovered that they didn't have electricity 400 years ago and all the pictures were in black and white!
On Monday we went on a trip to town. We went to Waterstones to have a look around the shop and choose a book with our World Book Day tokens. We also went to Poundland to work on our numeracy money targets. We chose an item and then paid for it ourselves. In art we made fire pictures practicing our cutting skills and using colours to represent fire. In literacy this week we have been working on our comprehension skills. We read a fact file all about frogs and then answered questions about it. We also read a story about the life of a firefighter and then drew and labelled firefighter pictures. We had a special visitor from the Fire Station who brought in lots of uniforms and equipment for us to try on. We also had a session with Lucy our music therapist this week. The pupils choose different instruments to play and sing along to the piano.
On Monday we went to a multi sport event at the LC2. All the pupils enjoyed the day especially playing Volleyball at the end! On Tuesday we were lucky enough to take part in some street games. There was a giant dart board that you had to kick balls at which was so much fun. We also had our last music therapy session with Lucy. The pupils made up their own song about things that they like. On Wednesday we went to the woods. We collected materials in two teams and then sorted them into an ABC grid. We couldn't find anything for 'U'. In the afternoon we went to our local library and chose a book to bring back to school. Next term we are going back for a pirate session!
On Monday we celebrated Earth Day! We learnt about an artist called Wassily Kandinsky. He was an abstract artist who used shapes and bright colours in his art. We painted trees in his style and recreated one of his famous paintings "Squares with Concentric Circles". This week we have also been exploring our new school vales. These are our Pen-y-Bryn CARES - Community, Ambition, Respect, Excitement and Safety. We designed a sensory display and went to buy different materials from Hobbycraft. We talked about what each of our CARES meant to us and created a class display. Thank you for your sponsor money, on Wednesday we had lots of fun raising money in our sponsored push. The pupils loved pushing themselves in the wheelchairs. We had a lovely last day, showing off our Easter hats and baskets in the parade in the morning and then collecting eggs in our Easter Egg hunt. On Wednesday we came into school to find that pirates had been fighting in our classroom! They had messed up the room and left a treasure map behind. We worked as a team to solve the clues and find a message in a bottle. The message was from pirate Pete. He wants us to tell his story and throw a pirate party to remind the world about pirates. The next day we received a video call from pirate Pete asking us to find his lost pages of the story. We went on an outdoor story walk where we took it in turns to find and read the story 'Pirate Pete and His Smelly Feet'. We also found stickers along the way and they smelled like rotten cheese! We decided to create a spider diagram to brainstorm ideas to complete pirate Pete's task. In numeracy we solved pirate word problems by drawing pictures to represent the problem. In History we learnt about the Golden Age of Piracy and followed instructions to create our own pirate. We also started our new Science topic learning about the different properties of materials. We did an experiment to find out which materials dissolved in water.
In literacy this week we scanned QR codes to learn the signs for key words in our story. We watched the video and then taught our classmates. We used the laptops to answer comprehension questions and print our work. We also read the story joining in with our new signs and then created a story mountain of the main events. In Welsh this week we started to learn some new words based around our theme. We played a game outside to help us to remember the new vocabulary. In science this week we learnt about materials that are natural and man made. We looked around school and took photographs of different materials on our iPads. When we got back to class we made an iPad book or collage to show the two types of materials that we found. All the pupils really enjoyed the athletics event on Thursday. We were lucky enough on Tuesday to have an author come into class to read us their book 'Princess Pirate Pants'. The pupils asked her questions and enjoyed the story. They did running, long jump and shotput. We have also been working really on our individual targets this week.
In numeracy this week we have been practising our money skills. We have been matching coins to Numicon and working out how much money was in the piggy banks. In literacy we have been working on our fine-motor skills by cutting out and sticking pirate pictures. We have also been working on our spellings, one to one reading and independent working. We have also been working in our garden this week and learning about what plants need to grow. The sunflowers that we planted are growing beautifully. Thank you for your support on sports day. All the pupils enjoyed the day in the sun! In the morning session we had a carousel of activities such as egg and spoon, tug of war, high jump, javelin and many more. And then, as some of know, the races in the afternoon. This week in cookery the pupils followed a recipe to make rocky road which was delicious.
In literacy this week we have drawn lovely visual story maps of our topic book 'Pirate Pete and his Smelly Feet'. We drew pictures to represent each part of the story using the paint tool on Hwb. We printed them out and used them to retell the story. In science this week we felt different materials and sorted them into hard and soft. We had a brilliant time on our trip on Wednesday. At the museum a pirate told us an old pirate story about Barti Ddu. He then let us look at different pirate weapons. In the afternoon we went to the park and had an ice cream. We also had a workshop from 3 mobile. They came in to teach us how to use an animation app on our iPads. We made animations of our story and they were amazing!
In literacy this week we have been using a new iPad app called story visualiser. We have built charters and scenes from our story 'Pirate Pete and His Smelly Feet' using Lego. We then took photographs of them and added text to retell the story. In history this week we have been learning about different pirate jobs. We chose which job we would like to do and completed an application form. In RE this week we started learning about Hinduism. We looked at the important symbols and then made one using crepe paper, they look lovely. Everyone enjoyed the trip to Folly Farm. We looked at the animals, played in the park and went on some fun rides.
In geography this week we watched a video about recycling. It showed us why its so important to recycle as much rubbish as we can and how to do it properly. We then used pink, green and black bags to recycle rubbish in class. In literacy we followed on from last week and finished our storyboards on the iPads. We built a scene, took photographs and added text to recreate our story. We had a brilliant time on our athletics trip. We worked really hard and won medals for our achievements.
